This weekend, Mike and I headed over to Martha's Vineyard for a little getaway before the baby arrives this fall. It also happened to be the weekend of the shark tournament!
We both had Friday off from work so we headed over in the afternoon on the 3:45pm ferry and parked our car at Woods Hole. Once we arrived in Vineyard Haven, we heard somebody yell Mike's name and it turned out to be our next door neighbor who is a State Trooper and is detailed to Martha's Vineyard for the summer months. Not a bad gig. Anyways, he asked us if we needed a ride over to our hotel in Edgartown and told us he would give us a lift. Little did I know, we were hopping in the back of the police cruiser. Pretty funny seeing a pregnant lady getting out of a police car!
We stayed at the Harborside Inn in Edgartown and it is located on the harbor which was beautiful. We just loved Edgartown - so quaint and peaceful. We walked around town for a little while and then decided to catch the bus to Oak Bluffs to see what was happening with the shark tournament. Oak Bluffs was crazy - so many boats and people everywhere but it was fun. We decided to grab dinner at Sharky's Catina and then walked around some more.
The next morning we woke up early and had breakfast at Among the Flowers in Edgartown. Mike suggested that we rent a car so we could get around the island without dealing with the bus. Looking back, we should have brought our car over. So we ended up renting a red Mini Cooper convertible for the weekend which was a blast! We zipped around the island in style!
We drove over to Aquinnah to see the cliffs and then headed over to Menemesha for lunch at the famous seafood shack called, The Bite. After lunch we decided to head back to the hotel and enjoyed a dip in their outdoor pool. After swimming, I enjoyed an ice cream cone at Mad Martha's and did a little shopping.
We then headed back to Oak Bluffs to see the "weigh inn" of the sharks. It was crazy and we couldn't even get close enough to see how big the sharks were so we ended up just sitting on the dock watching the boats come back from the tournament. We then grabbed some dinner and headed over to meet Mike's friend, Ian in Vineyard Haven. Ian is a Captain of a yacht called the Resilence and he was over their for the shark tournament. Ian was able to give us a quick tour of the yacht and then we joined him at the after party for the shark tournament.
We woke up early on Sunday morning to catch the 8:30am ferry back to Woods Hole since Mike had to study for his first exam tomorrow morning at the Pilgrim plant. He is in training for the next four months and has an exam every Monday morning. So we had to get back early and get settled back at home. We had a great time on the Vineyard and hope to return again next summer!
